An Evening of Entertainment

On Friday, May 18th, St. Lucas Congregation members and friends are invited to enjoy an evening of entertainment provided by the students of St. Lucas Lutheran School.

The St. Lucas Preschool  will present the skit “Hansel and Gretel in  Mother Goose Land” starting at 6:30 p.m..  Grades K-4 will present the musical “Squirm”  immediately following the preschool program.  "Squirm" is an adventure that explores things that are creepy, crawly, and gross. Can things that make us Squirm be useful? Or are they just there to make us shiver? Come and find out.

4th GRADE STATE PROJECTS will be on display in the cafeteria before the musicals from 5-6pm. Stop by to learn some fun facts about some of the 50 states

St. Lucas Divine Call Reports

Early last week, Miss Margaret Polzin returned the Divine Call to Shoreland Lutheran High School. Then, on Thursday night, the St. Lucas Voters created the position of Reading Specialist. This student support position was on the St. Lucas long-range plan. Miss Polzin is nearly completed with her Master’s degree in this area; therefore, the BOCE recommended we move forward on the plan. Miss Polzin will fill the newly established position. This creates a vacancy in the upper grades. Mr. Gurgel will move to grade seven. The voters approved that we go to the Martin Luther College assignment committee for a graduate for grade eight. Students in the upper grades rotate teachers for core content areas and specials throughout the day. Mr. Gurgel would continue to be in that rotation and teach our Reading/Literature. Right now, the Board will be looking for a teacher candidate with a strong background in Science to strengthen that program at our school. The voters also approved the BOCE recommendation that Miss Belinda Diercks be called again to serve as Kindergarten teacher for the 2012-2013 school year. This is a one year Divine Call. Other staffing items that are coming up include: 1) a hire for 3K, 2) a move of Mrs. Kerr from 3K to 4K, 3) an FT Educational Assistant in grade one, 4) an increase in school custodial hours, and 5) an increase in school administrative assistant hours for the Choice program. All these items are part of the congregational budgeting process and do not involve Divine Calls. The first reading of the budget is to be held on Thursday, May 24 at 7:00 p.m.

St. Lucas Grade School Celebrates 140 Years

(February 27, 2012)

Every year, during the first week of March, Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Schools celebrate their Lutheran identity and uniqueness.  Lutheran schools have brought countless blessings to our synod for more than 150 years.   This year during Lutheran Schools Week, St. Lucas will be celebrating 140 years of Christian education.

Over the past 140 years St. Lucas has seen many changes; structural changes, historical changes and enrollment changes.  One thing has remained constant throughout – the Word of God.  From the date St. Lucas was founded. October 6, 1872 ,through today, children continue to hear the Word of God every day.

The present school property was purchased in 1891 for $2,000.  A four-room school was built for $8,000.  In 1919, a large auditorium/gymnasium was added, schoolrooms were remodeled and four bowling alleys were installed in the basement.  That same year, the local public school authorities accredited the school.  In 1961 the old school, minus the gymnasium and bowling alleys was razed and a new school built.  The school enrollment for the 1961-1962 school year was 240.  In 1963, the school faculty was increased to eight full-time teachers when enrollment increased to 302.  In 1997, two houses to the north of the existing school were razed as well as the school, gymnasium and bowling alleys and our current building was built.

This past year St. Lucas has been blessed by God with new academic recognition. The school has received exemplary accredited status from three accrediting organizations. They are the National Council of Private School Accreditation Board, The Wisconsin Religious and Independent School Association, and the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod. Additionally, an independent study group out of Chicago rated St. Lucas a Tier One school within the city of Milwaukee.

These blessings, and many more will be celebrated with a spaghetti dinner on Saturday, March 3 at 6 p.m..  This celebration will include a meal, a literacy speaker, dessert, and a visual trip through the past 140 years.  The meal will consist of salad and spaghetti with meat sauce or meatless sauce.  There is a suggested donation of $5 per adult and $3 per child.

All proceeds will to the Elementary Student Assistance Endowment Fund.  The Student Assistance Fund helps families who cannot afford a Christian education at St. Lucas.  Please contact Ericka Tipton at 414-483-9122 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to receive your tickets for the dinner.  Your donation can be given when you pick up your tickets.

This year, St. Lucas is connecting National March into Literacy Month with Lutheran Schools Week.  The month of March is dedicated to promoting reading and literacy among children.  Following dinner on March 3rd, Nicole Angresano, from United Way will be speaking on the topic of literacy.

The Scholastic Book Fair will be at St. Lucas the week of March 4 – 11 as part of Literacy Month.  The book fair will be open before and after school, during the academic showcase on Thursday, March 8 and between church services on Sunday, March 11.  St. Lucas receives money to purchase Scholastic books based on our sales at the book fair.  Please visit the book fair and check out the variety of books along with the teacher’s wish lists.

School Service Project Underway

(January 28, 2012)

St. Lucas has enjoyed 140 years of teaching others about Jesus Christ. Not every faith family can say that. Living Hope in New Brighton, Colorado is one of them. Living Hope is only a few years old. This WELS home mission congregation has opportunities for growth and needs support from folks like us. As part of our 140th celebration, our school will be supporting this outreach ministry. Many baptisms are taking place at Living Hope so their pastor, Chad Walta, has suggested Baptism Bags. There will be more to come on this. For now, please know that chapel offerings will go to support brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ who are apart of this home mission project. Pray for this young congregation often.
